5 Reasons to Tour Your Hometown

Travel bucket lists don’t normally include your hometown, but they absolutely should!

Growing up just outside of Toronto, Ontario, most would assume I would be an expert on it by now. Yet, it wasn’t until a few years ago when I began working downtown that I started to really discover the city. This is also when I learned the value in being a tourist in my own hometown.

Exploring what makes and defines Toronto has (and continues to be) a thoughtful and refreshing experience. As the city constantly shifts and expands there is always something new to be discovered.

Here are the top 5 reasons to explore your hometown:

1. You’ll rediscover yourself within your space

Have you ever felt out of place within your hometown? At some point in our lives, most of us will go through phases of uncertainty and boredom within our space. Exploring our hometowns provides us with an opportunity to break out of the mould we have created for ourselves and discover even more about what keeps us connected to home. Whether you find a new street to run down, or a new coffee shop to enjoy, you may rediscover where you best fit within your own space.

2. You’ll learn about your hometown’s history

Understanding your city’s history is more than a learning opportunity, it’s a chance to remember the reasons you love where you live. Going to the museum, reading a book, or taking a tour may motivate you to explore your city further. Moreover, you can share all you’ve learned about your hometown with those that you meet throughout your travels!

3. You’ll meet new and interesting people

Meeting new people is one of my favourite things. Speaking with others allows us to not only feel connected to someone else, but it gives us a deeper understanding of ourselves simultaneously. It also gives us the chance to understand fresh perspectives or new ideas that we’ve never considered. Together we can all learn some pretty cool things.

4. You’ll discover new activities and shops to experience

Let the shopping begin! As a strong believer in supporting local shops, taking the time to walk around your downtown may lead you to something you’ve never experienced before. Consider stopping by your local shops next time you’re in the mood to explore. You never know when you’ll stumble upon a hidden gem.

5. You’ll have a renewed understanding of your surroundings and what makes them special

Cities are ever-changing. Sometimes we could all use a reminder of what makes us thankful for our hometown, rediscovering both the old and the new. I can assure you, you wont be disappointed with your hometown adventure.

A “Trouvaille” is waiting to be discovered. What are you waiting for?
